Revelations of sometimes embarrassing internal conversations continue to come thick and fast as the lawsuit between Epic Games and Apple proceeds. Last week, for instance, we learned that Apple took a surprisingly lenient approach in a similar dispute with Netflix.
The latest batch includes an email conversation between two Apple employees from 2016 in which one of the employees alleges that App Store manager Matt Fischer (who is not part of the conversation) “feels extremely strongly” about apps from competitors being highlighted in a promoted collection.
“Although they may be our best and the brightest apps, Matt feels extremely strong about not featuring our competitors on the App Store store [sic],” reads the email.
Yet Matt Fischer, while not disputing the existence of the email, insists that the statement made by the employee is erroneous. The claim is “definitely not accurate”, he said, adding that the employee was “very misinformed”.
In fact, the company claims, Apple highlights competitors’ apps “all the time”. For example, it has not had any problems with highlighting Peacock and Hulu, despite the fact that these two apps compete with Apple TV+.
