‘Dating Game’ Continues For Apple Car Project

Every few days a new rumour emerges about a possible partner for Apple’s electric vehicle project. It’s a little like the dating game, observes Wedbush analyst Dan Ives.

There have been numerous setbacks lately, although it’s not always clear who has dumped whom. Nissan has stated emphatically that it’s not in negotiations with Apple (despite initially appearing very open to the idea); Hyundai had to backtrack after putting its foot in it; and Volkswagen is unbothered by the whole situation.

Despite these unpromising headlines, the latter two vehicle manufacturers remain top candidates for the Apple Car gig, thanks to their modular platforms for electric vehicles.

And Ives thinks progress is being made. He reckons there is an 85% probability that Apple will be able to announce its bride in the next three to six months.

The economic and ecological climate of the Biden presidency also favours developments in electromobility. Apple is in a position to turn the market, which is currently dominated by Tesla, GM and Ford, on its head if it succeeds in bringing an Apple Car on to the road with a suitable partner by 2024.
